Fire Resistant Cable Ladder

Fire Resistant Cable Ladder

Fire resistant cable ladder is developed from standard ladder trays by applying intumescent fire retardant coatings, wrapping fire resistant mica tape layers, or using double wall composite structures.

Under fire conditions, it maintains structural integrity for a specified period (e.g., 30, 60, or 90 minutes), delaying direct flame attack on cables and providing critical time for evacuation and firefighting.

It retains the open structure of ladder trays, offering excellent heat dissipation and easy access for future cable additions or replacements. It is ideal for industrial sites where cables generate high heat and maintenance is frequent.

Main Applications

Fire resistant cable ladders are widely used in:

Thermal power plants – boiler rooms, turbine halls, high‑temperature cable routes

Substations & converter stations – main transformer downleads, high‑current circuits

Heavy industry workshops – steel smelting, non‑ferrous metal processing

Metallurgy & mining – underground and surface power distribution in fire‑prone areas

Oil, gas & chemical – control and power cable routes in non‑hazardous zones

It is particularly suitable for projects where cables generate significant heat, require good ventilation, and need frequent retrofitting or maintenance. For example, old plant renovations or staged capacity expansion – the ladder structure allows easy cable addition/removal without dismantling entire tray sections.

Limitations – When NOT to Use

Not for environments with strict electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements

The open ladder provides no shielding. For instrument signal cables or low‑voltage communication lines, use solid‑bottom or perforated trays with covers.

Not for high dust/water ingress protection (IP54 or higher)

The open design cannot prevent dust accumulation or water intrusion. For outdoor dusty or rainy areas, add a weatherproof cover or switch to a non‑perforated tray.

Application Precautions

To ensure effective fire performance and safe operation, follow these guidelines:

Selection verification

– Confirm required fire rating (30, 60, or 90 minutes) and choose certified products.
– Match load class with actual cable weight to avoid deformation.

Installation requirements

– Use fire‑rated connectors at tray joints and maintain electrical bonding.
– When passing through walls or floors, seal openings strictly with firestop materials (firestop putty, pillows, or boards) to prevent fire spread.
– Supports and hangers should also be fire‑protected (e.g., galvanized + fire‑retardant coating).

Surface protection

– Fireproof coatings or mica layers may be damaged during transport or cutting. After field cutting, reapply the same fire‑retardant coating on cut edges to the original dry film thickness.
– Do not strike or scratch the coating with sharp tools.

Clearance from other lines

– Maintain safe distance from hot pipelines (steam, hot air) to avoid thermal degradation of the fire coating.
– Separate from flammable gas pipes, or install fire barriers.

Inspection & maintenance

– Inspect every six months for coating peeling, blistering, or rust; repair promptly.
– If cables run abnormally hot, check ventilation – do not seal the ladder openings for fire reasons.

Grounding

– As a metallic conductor, the ladder tray must be reliably grounded according to electrical codes to prevent shock hazards.
